Patient Champion: Cayden “Beau” Hefner
Hometown: Mansfield, Ohio
Age: 6
Diagnosis: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia
Driver: Elliott Sadler

Beau first arrived at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in April of 2011, and was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia just a few days later. He was just four years old then.

Today, more than two years since his diagnosis, Beau is in the maintenance phase of his cancer treatment and has just over a year remaining. He makes monthly visits to Nationwide Children’s for chemotherapy, endures a lumbar puncture every three months, and takes a variety of medications orally. Once he is done with treatment, remission at five years is the next milestone for Beau. If no relapse occurs, the chances of officially beating the “Cancer Bullies” for good is highly probable.

In between doctor visits, Beau stays very busy with sports – including his favorites, t-ball and soccer. This summer he ran his first “kids fun run.” Now that his sports are winding down, Beau is looking forward to some time to enjoy the great outdoors. He loves to fish, swim, ride his ATV and play with his friends. This fall, Beau will be entering the first grade after excelling in his kindergarten class.
